Eye Care

Eye examination

The scope of the standard optometry eye examination is defined under the Medicare Schedule and covers a range of tests including history, refraction, external and internal examination of the eye, diagnosis and prescription of remedial or therapeutic agents as indicated.

At eyetech, our advanced technology allows us to practice well beyond the scope of the standard Medicare eye examination.  Without question, you and the long-term health of your eyes will benefit from the higher standards of care we are able to offer.
The common conditions of the eye are well documented and comprehensively described elsewhere. A brief summary follows:

Myopia (short-sight) = blur at distance, clearer at near.  Myopia may progress alarmingly in children, but we now know that eyesight can be stabilized in suitable candidates with overnight ortho-K therapy (Clear Vision Corneal Reshaping Program).

Hyperopia (long-sight) = blur at near, clearer at distance.  Hyperopia is not a progressive condition but may become more manifest in the 20’s through to the middle years.

Presbyopia (old-sight) = blur at near due to reduced accommodation function of the eye muscles.  Presbyopia occurs predictably in all humans as a function of aging and is often confused with hyperopia.

Astigmatism (distortion) = blur at all distances due to unequal focussing in different meridians of the eye.  Low degrees of astigmatism commonly occur in conjunction with the other refractive conditions.

Keratoconus (conical cornea) = a localized thinning of the cornea that results in asymmetry of the shape of the eye.  Mild cases of keratoconus are far more common than previously recognised and are not progressive.  More advanced or traditional keratoconus is progressive and hard or gas-permeable contact lenses are often needed to achieve full visual acuity.  A new technology called ‘Collagen Cross-Linking’ is available upon referral to stabilize keratoconus once it is shown to be progressing.

Dry eye

A number of disturbances to the tear film known collectively as ‘dry eye’ may cause symptoms of varying severity from dry, scratchy irritation to severe discomfort and photophobia (aversion to bright light).  At eyetech, we offer the latest technology in the management of dry eye from preservative-free lubricants and nutritional supplements to miniature (punctal) plugs that help to prevent unwanted drainage of tear fluid.

Eye health

Often there is no difference at all in the external appearance of a healthy versus a sick or blind eye.  Many forms of eye disease are insidious, progressing slowly over a lengthy period of time without warning.  The best way to ensure that your eyes are truly healthy is to have regular eye examinations as recommended by your optometrist.
