SCLERAL LENSES

Scleral lenses are a fantastic customised lens option to manage keratoconus, corneal grafts, high refractive error and significant dry eye conditions. These lenses are larger than standard contact lenses (minimum 16mm diameter). Scleral lenses work by creating a reservoir of fluid between the cornea and the contact lens to correct for corneal irregularities. The weight of the lens is distributed on the sclera, which is the white part of the eye (hence the terminology). This also allows great comfort, as the sclera has significantly reduced sensitivity compared to the cornea.

Scleral lenses are complex to fit and design, as each eye is unique. At Eyetech, we use advanced programming of anterior OCT and Pentacam tomography to accurately fit and customise scleral lenses to suit each individual eye, no matter how unique!
